Correcting Your Name or Date of Birth in Aadhaar: The Limits, and the Order to Do It In
Sarkari Naukri Khabar • All India
A mismatch between your Aadhaar and your certificates can stop an application at document verification. Fixing Aadhaar is possible, but UIDAI allows only a limited number of changes: the name twice, the gender once, and the date of birth once in a lifetime. The date of birth is the one to be most careful with, because under UIDAI's procedure of 24 December 2025 the document you use decides whether you can ever change it again. This guide sets out the limits, which documents UIDAI accepts, and why you should correct your marksheet or birth certificate first.
The limits
UIDAI's office memorandum of 1 April 2019 records the rule. Under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Sixth Amendment Regulations, 2018, the date of birth can be updated only once; the name can be updated twice; and the gender once.
If you need a change beyond these limits, it is still possible, but only through an exception handling process, which may require you to visit a UIDAI Regional Office. So treat each change as one you may not get back.
- Name: twice in a lifetime.
- Gender: once.
- Date of birth: once.
Why the order matters: fix the source document first
Aadhaar is not where your date of birth comes from. It copies it from a document you submit. If your marksheet or birth certificate is itself wrong, correcting Aadhaar to match it only spends your one change on the wrong date.
So correct the source document first, then update Aadhaar to match the corrected document. Our guides on correcting the date of birth in a marksheet and on the Bihar birth certificate explain the first step.
The date of birth rules, from UIDAI's 2025 procedure
On 24 December 2025 UIDAI issued a Standard Operating Procedure for date of birth updates that replaces all its earlier instructions on the subject. Its starting point is that a person has only one date of birth, and that a birth certificate is the legal proof of it.
- Once a birth certificate has been submitted as proof of date of birth, UIDAI will not normally consider any further date of birth update.
- For anyone under 18, the birth certificate is the only document accepted for a date of birth update.
- If you earlier gave a birth certificate and it needs correcting, the only document accepted is the corrected birth certificate with the same Birth Registration Number, from the same registrar, with an affidavit.
- If you earlier gave another document, such as a marksheet or passport, you must give a corrected version of that same document, or a birth certificate, with an affidavit.
The marksheet trap
UIDAI's procedure defines a corrected version of the same document strictly: issued by the same authority, with the same description, for the same year, with the same details except the corrected date of birth. It gives an example that catches many candidates.
A marksheet for the same qualification, obtained by appearing in the exam again in a different year, is not the same document. So if your date of birth in Aadhaar came from your matric marksheet, you cannot use a later re-appearance marksheet to change it. You would need the corrected original marksheet, or a birth certificate.
If the operator made the mistake
If the date of birth in Aadhaar differs from the document you submitted at enrolment, UIDAI treats it as an operator error. You can ask for the correction using that same document, if it is still on the valid list. If you no longer have it, or it is no longer valid, the procedure allows the request on a self-declaration that the date was entered incorrectly by the operator; UIDAI will check the document you originally submitted.
For women whose name changed after marriage
UIDAI's procedure accepts date of birth documents issued before marriage, in the maiden name, provided you also show evidence of the name change, such as your Aadhaar with the old name or a marriage certificate carrying both names.
A warning about false documents
UIDAI's procedure is direct about this. Where a wrong date of birth was recorded using false or fraudulently obtained documents, the Aadhaar is deactivated when the case comes to light. The person gets one last opportunity to correct it with a genuine, online-verifiable proof of date of birth and an affidavit, and depending on the circumstances an FIR may also be lodged. Never use an altered certificate to make your Aadhaar match a form.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can I change my date of birth in Aadhaar?
Once. UIDAI's office memorandum of 1 April 2019 records that the date of birth can be updated only once. Beyond that, only through an exception handling process that may need a visit to a UIDAI Regional Office.
How many times can I change my name in Aadhaar?
Twice in a lifetime. The gender can be changed once.
Can I use a new marksheet to change my Aadhaar date of birth?
Not if it came from re-appearing in the exam in a different year. UIDAI's 2025 procedure says that is not the same document. You need the corrected original marksheet, or a birth certificate.
I already gave a birth certificate to Aadhaar. Can I change the date later?
Not normally. Only with a corrected birth certificate carrying the same Birth Registration Number, from the same registrar, along with an affidavit.
The Aadhaar operator entered my date of birth wrongly. What do I do?
Request the correction with the same document you gave at enrolment. If you no longer have it, UIDAI's procedure allows a self-declaration that the operator made the error, and it will check your original document.
Should I correct Aadhaar or my certificate first?
Your certificate first. Aadhaar copies the date from the document you submit, and you get only one date of birth change, so spend it on the corrected date.
