Admit Card Problems and Exam Day Rules

Sarkari Naukri Khabar  •  All India

Every exam produces a set of candidates turned away at the gate, and almost none of them were unprepared for the paper. They were turned away over an admit card that never downloaded, a photograph the invigilator could not match to a face, an identity document that did not carry the same name, or an item in a pocket that the notification had listed as prohibited. This guide covers what to do when an admit card does not appear, what to check on it the moment it does, what to carry, and the rules that end an attempt before it starts.

When the admit card does not download

Work through this in order before assuming something is wrong.

  • Check the date. Admit cards are released on a stated date, often only days before the exam, and are not available earlier however many times you refresh.
  • Check you are on the right site: the recruiting body's own, not a copy. Admit card pages are a favourite target for cloned sites collecting registration numbers.
  • Try a different browser, and a computer rather than a phone. Some portals fail on mobile browsers in ways that look like an error with your application.
  • Try late at night. Servers are overwhelmed on release day.
  • Check your application status. If the application was rejected (an unpaid fee, a failed upload) there will be no admit card, and that is the actual problem to solve.
  • Only then use the published helpline or grievance address, with your registration number ready.

Check these the moment it downloads

Do not print it and put it away. Read it, while there is still time to raise a correction.

  • Your name, spelled as on your identity document.
  • Date of birth, roll number and registration number.
  • The photograph: is it yours, is it the one you uploaded, is it legible.
  • Exam date, reporting time and gate closing time. Reporting time is not exam time and the gap is often an hour or more.
  • The centre address in full, and the city. Candidates are routinely allotted a centre in a different city from the one they chose.
  • The list of prohibited items and the identity documents accepted.
  • Any instruction specific to that exam: a printed photograph to be pasted, a form to be signed in advance, a specific pen.

The identity document

The name on your photo identity must match the admit card. This is checked, and a mismatch is the commonest reason for a refusal at the gate.

Carry the original, not a photocopy and not a photo on your phone. Digital copies are usually not accepted, whatever seems reasonable.

Carry a second identity document if you have one. If the first is questioned, having another has saved people the attempt.

If your identity document and admit card genuinely disagree in name, raise it with the recruiting body before the exam through its published route. Turning up hoping to explain it at the gate puts the decision in the hands of somebody applying a rule, at the worst possible moment.

What to carry, and what not to

The notification lists both. It is worth reading the list again the night before, because it differs between recruiting bodies.

  • Carry: the printed admit card, original photo identity, the photographs the instructions ask for, and the pen specified if one is.
  • Do not carry: mobile phone, smart watch, any watch where the exam says so, calculator, Bluetooth device, earphones, books, notes or paper of any kind.
  • Also commonly prohibited: bags, wallets, metal jewellery, and in some exams items of clothing with large pockets or full sleeves.
  • Many centres have no facility to store anything. Assume nothing can be left safely and take nothing you cannot carry in.

Rules that end an attempt

These are not warnings. They result in the paper being cancelled and, in some cases, a bar from future recruitments by that body.

  • Carrying a mobile phone into the hall, even switched off, even unused.
  • Any communication with another candidate during the exam.
  • Any written material, on paper or on your person.
  • Leaving the hall before the permitted time, or taking the question paper where it must be left.
  • Impersonation: which is treated as a criminal matter, not merely a disqualification.
  • A signature or handwriting sample that does not match the one on record. This is why the signature you upload should be your normal running hand, not a specially drawn one.

Reaching the centre

Go to the centre the day before if it is in an unfamiliar city, or at least find it on a map and check how long the journey takes at that hour.

Reporting time is a gate closing time in practice. Arriving after it is refused, and the reason (traffic, a late train) does not change the outcome.

Allow for the queue. Verification of hundreds of candidates takes time, and the gate closes while people are still in it.

If the centre is in another city, plan travel and stay as soon as the admit card is released. Trains fill up around large exams for exactly this reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

My admit card is not downloading. What should I check first?

The release date, then that you are on the recruiting body's own site rather than a copy, then a different browser or a computer instead of a phone, then late at night when servers are quieter. Also check your application status, a rejected application produces no admit card, and that is the real problem.

Is reporting time the same as exam time?

No, and the gap is often an hour or more. Reporting time is in practice the gate closing time. Arriving after it means being refused entry, and traffic or a late train does not change that.

Can I show my ID on my phone?

No. Carry the original document. Digital copies and photocopies are usually not accepted, and the name on it must match your admit card, a mismatch is the commonest reason for refusal at the gate.

I am carrying a switched-off phone. Is that allowed?

No. Carrying a mobile phone into the hall ends the attempt whether it is switched off or never used. Many centres have nowhere to store belongings, so take nothing you cannot carry in.

The name on my admit card differs from my ID. What do I do?

Raise it with the recruiting body before the exam, through its published grievance route. Turning up hoping to explain at the gate leaves the decision to someone applying a rule at the worst possible moment.

Why does my signature matter on exam day?

You give a fresh signature and handwriting sample at the centre, and it is compared with the one on record. That is why the signature you upload should be your normal running hand rather than one drawn specially for the form.
