BTSC 2026 Exam Pattern: 0.25 Negative Marking, the 0.75 Multiplier and Your Qualifying Mark

Sarkari Naukri Khabar  •  Bihar

BTSC decides these four recruitments on a two-hour computer based test, and two rules in the notification change how you should answer it. Each wrong answer costs 0.25, so a guess has to be better than a coin toss to be worth making. And in three of the four, your test percentage is multiplied by 0.75 before anything else is added, so 60 per cent becomes 45 marks. This guide explains the pattern, the qualifying mark for your category, the experience weightage and why a candidate from outside Bihar needs a higher score than a Bihar candidate of the same category.

The paper

All four recruitments use the same shape of test. It is a computer based test, two hours long, with 100 multiple choice questions, and the paper is set in both Hindi and English.

There is no interview and no second stage. Everything rests on this one sitting, and the Commission applies normalisation when a test runs in more than one shift.

0.25 for every wrong answer

Advertisements 27/2026 and 29/2026 state it plainly: negative marking applies and 0.25 is deducted for each wrong answer. Advertisement 30/2026 says negative marking applies without printing the fraction in legible type, so read it there before the exam.

What this means in practice: on a pure guess between four options you are right once and wrong three times, losing 0.75 to gain 1, which is close to breaking even and not worth doing at volume. Eliminate one option and the arithmetic turns in your favour. Eliminate none and leave it.

The 0.75 multiplier, which surprises people

In Advt 27, 28 and 30 the test is worth 75 marks, not 100, and your score is converted before anything is added to it. The notification gives the worked example: a candidate scoring 60 per cent gets 60 x 0.75 = 45 marks. For Advt 30 the example given is 50 per cent becoming 37.5 marks.

So the number you see after the exam is not the number that goes into the merit list. Advt 29/2026, Food Safety Officer, is the exception: its test is worth the full 100 marks with no experience component.

Up to 25 marks for contract service

In Advt 27, 28 and 30, a candidate already serving on contract in the same post gets 5 marks for each year served, up to a maximum of 25 marks for five years. Added to the 75 from the test, that makes 100.

This is weightage for people already doing the job, and it is substantial: a full 25 marks is a quarter of the total. To claim it you need a certificate from the authority the notification names, and service is counted proportionally for part of a year.

The qualifying mark depends on your category

Reaching the qualifying mark does not select you, it only keeps you in the reckoning. Below it, nothing else counts.

  • General: 40 per cent
  • Backward Class: 36.5 per cent
  • Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Extremely Backward Class: 34 per cent
  • Women and disabled candidates: 32 per cent
  • All candidates from outside Bihar: 40 per cent, whatever their category at home

Why an outside candidate needs more

The last line of that list is the one that catches people. Reservation and the lower qualifying marks in these advertisements are for permanent residents of Bihar only. A candidate from Uttar Pradesh or Jharkhand competes as general and must reach 40 per cent, even if they hold an OBC or SC certificate from their own state.

The lower figure for women, 32 per cent, is also limited to Bihar's permanent residents. A woman from outside the state needs 40 per cent.

What to do with this before the exam

Two practical consequences. First, work out your own target: a Bihar EBC candidate needs 34 per cent to stay in the reckoning, an outside candidate needs 40, and those are different exams to prepare for.

Second, decide your guessing rule before you sit down, not in the hall. With 0.25 against you, "answer everything" is a worse strategy than it looks, and "leave everything you are unsure of" throws away marks you could have had. Answer where you can rule out at least one option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much negative marking is there in BTSC 2026?

0.25 for each wrong answer in Advt 27/2026 and 29/2026. Advt 30/2026 states that negative marking applies; check the fraction in the notification itself.

Why is my BTSC score multiplied by 0.75?

In Advt 27, 28 and 30 the test carries 75 of the 100 marks, so your percentage is converted: 60 per cent becomes 45 marks. The other 25 marks are for contract service in the same post.

What is the qualifying mark for BTSC 2026?

40 per cent general, 36.5 per cent Backward Class, 34 per cent SC, ST and Extremely Backward Class, 32 per cent women and disabled candidates. All candidates from outside Bihar need 40 per cent.

Is there an interview in BTSC 2026?

No. Selection is the computer based test, plus weightage for contract service where the advertisement provides for it.

Does Food Safety Officer also have the 0.75 multiplier?

No. Advt 29/2026 is a single test worth the full 100 marks, with no contract service component.

I am from outside Bihar and I am OBC. Which qualifying mark applies to me?

40 per cent. The lower qualifying marks and the reservation are for permanent residents of Bihar only.
