Normalisation in Bihar Exams: Why Your Raw Score Is Not the Score That Counts
Sarkari Naukri Khabar • Bihar
When a Bihar recruitment examination runs in more than one shift, the marks that reach the merit list are not the marks you scored. The BTSC advertisements say normalisation is applied, and separately three of the four multiply your percentage by 0.75 before any weightage is added. Two different conversions, both stated in the notification, and between them the number on your screen after the exam can be a long way from the number that decides your result. This guide explains both.
Why normalisation exists at all
A recruitment with lakhs of applicants cannot seat everyone at once, so the examination runs in several shifts on several days, and each shift gets a different question paper. However carefully the papers are set, one shift ends up slightly harder than another.
Without a correction, a candidate who sat the harder shift would be punished for an accident of scheduling. Normalisation is the arithmetic that adjusts for that, so that candidates across shifts are compared on the same scale.
What the BTSC advertisements actually say
The four BTSC advertisements open now state that where the competitive examination is held in more than one shift, the result is prepared after applying the process of normalisation to the marks obtained. It is stated as a certainty for multi-shift examinations, not as an option.
They do not publish the formula. That is normal and it is worth knowing, because no coaching centre can tell you your normalised score in advance either; anyone offering to is guessing.
The second conversion: the 0.75 multiplier
This one is separate from normalisation and catches more people. In BTSC Advertisements 27, 28 and 30 of 2026 the written test carries 75 of the 100 marks, and your percentage is converted before anything is added: the notification gives the worked example of 60 per cent becoming 60 x 0.75 = 45 marks, and for Advt 30 of 50 per cent becoming 37.5.
Advertisement 29/2026, Food Safety Officer, is the exception. Its test is worth the full 100 marks and there is no experience component, so no multiplier applies.
And the third: negative marking
Before either conversion, 0.25 is deducted for each wrong answer in Advertisements 27/2026 and 29/2026. Advertisement 30/2026 states that negative marking applies without printing the fraction legibly, so read it there.
So three things happen between what you answer and what the merit list sees: wrong answers subtract, the total may be scaled by 0.75, and normalisation adjusts across shifts.
What this changes about how you prepare
Two practical consequences. First, stop converting your mock test percentage into an expected rank, because the qualifying marks are expressed as percentages of the test, but the merit list runs on converted marks with weightage added.
Second, the qualifying mark is the one number that is not converted. 40 per cent general, 36.5 per cent Backward Class, 34 per cent SC, ST and Extremely Backward Class, 32 per cent women and disabled candidates, and 40 per cent for anyone from outside Bihar. That threshold is what your practice scores should be measured against.
What not to believe
Normalisation attracts more rumour than any other part of a Bihar recruitment. Two things are worth holding on to. The commission publishes the result, not the formula, so nobody can compute your normalised score from your raw one. And normalisation is applied only when an examination actually runs in multiple shifts; a single-shift examination has nothing to normalise.
If a claim about your marks does not come from the commission's own notice, it is not a fact about your marks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is normalisation in a Bihar recruitment exam?
When the examination runs in more than one shift, the marks are adjusted so candidates across shifts are compared on the same scale. The BTSC advertisements say the result is prepared after applying it.
Does BTSC publish the normalisation formula?
No. The advertisements state that normalisation is applied but do not give the formula, so nobody can compute your normalised score from your raw score in advance.
Why is my BTSC score multiplied by 0.75?
In Advertisements 27, 28 and 30 of 2026 the test carries 75 of the 100 marks, so your percentage is converted: 60 per cent becomes 45 marks. The other 25 are for contract service in the same post.
Which BTSC recruitment has no multiplier?
Advt 29/2026, Food Safety Officer. Its test is worth the full 100 marks with no experience component.
Is the qualifying mark normalised too?
The qualifying marks are stated as percentages: 40 general, 36.5 Backward Class, 34 SC, ST and Extremely Backward Class, 32 women and disabled candidates, and 40 for candidates from outside Bihar.
