Wrong Date of Birth on a Marksheet - How the Board Correction Works, and Why It Has a Deadline

Sarkari Naukri Khabar  •  Bihar

Your date of birth decides whether you are eligible at all, and every government recruitment reads it from the matriculation certificate rather than from Aadhaar. If that certificate is wrong, no other document can rescue you, and the correction has to be made at the board that issued it. This guide explains why the board and not the recruitment is the place to go, what a board can and cannot change, why the window for applying closes and what that means if you are already past it, and what to do about a recruitment running right now.

The matriculation certificate is the one that counts

Government recruitment does not treat all your documents as equal on this question. For date of birth, the certificate of the matriculation or secondary examination is the document that decides, and most notifications say so in plain words.

That is why fixing Aadhaar does not fix this. Candidates spend weeks getting Aadhaar changed, arrive at verification pleased with themselves, and are told the marksheet is what was asked for. Aadhaar is an identity document. The board certificate is the record of the date, and it outranks everything else here.

It also explains why the problem is invisible for years. A wrong date on a school record causes no trouble at all until the first age limit is applied to it, which is usually the first serious form you fill.

So check it before you need it. Read the date on your matriculation certificate today, against the date you believe is yours, and against your Aadhaar and any other document. If they disagree, you have found the problem while you still have time to act on it.

Go to the board, not to the recruitment

A recruiting department cannot change your date of birth. It has no power to, and asking wastes the time you need elsewhere. The correction is made by the examination board that issued the certificate.

For a Bihar School Examination Board certificate, that is BSEB, through biharboardonline.bihar.gov.in and the board's own office. For CBSE, ICSE or another state board, the correction goes to that board under its own rules. The rules are not the same everywhere, so read the board's own instructions rather than a general article, including this one.

Your school matters too. Boards work from the school's records, so a correction is usually routed through the school that entered the original data, with the school forwarding the request and its supporting records.

Take the board's own published procedure as the authority on documents, forms, fees and timelines. This page tells you how the process is shaped; only the board can tell you its current requirements, and those change.

What the board is actually being asked to decide

A board correction is not an administrative favour. It is a decision that a record is factually wrong, and the board needs evidence that predates the record.

This is the point candidates miss. A document created recently that states your correct date proves very little, because it may simply have copied the same error or been made to your account of it. What carries weight is evidence from the time: the school admission register, the transfer certificate, the original birth registration.

The birth certificate from the municipal or panchayat registrar is usually the strongest of these, particularly where the registration was made near the time of birth. If your birth was never registered, that is a separate task and it comes first, because without it the correction has little to stand on.

Boards distinguish between a typing error and a change of the recorded date, exactly as certificate offices do. A certificate that says 1998 where the school register says 1998 and the typist wrote 1989 is a correction. A certificate that matches the school register, where you now say the register was always wrong, is a much harder case and needs evidence against the register itself.

Be honest about which of those you have before you start, because it determines how much evidence you need to gather.

Why the window closes

Boards allow corrections for a limited period after the result is declared, and this surprises people who assume a factual error can be fixed whenever it is discovered.

The reason is that a school leaving certificate is relied on by employers, by other boards and by universities for decades. A date that can be revised at any time is not a reliable record, so boards close the window and hold the record stable afterwards.

The practical consequence is severe and worth stating plainly: the person most likely to need this correction, an adult meeting an age limit for the first time, is the person most likely to be outside the window. That is not a rumour and it is not unfair treatment. It is the design.

Once the window has closed, an administrative correction is generally no longer available, and the remaining route is a legal one, which is slow and outside what any website can guide you through. If you are in that position, take proper advice rather than guidance from a forum.

Check the current window with your board before you conclude anything, because the period and the exceptions are the board's to state and they are not the same everywhere.

The recruitment that is open right now

Whatever the state of your correction, some things are fixed.

Never alter the document. Not the scan, not the PDF, not one digit. A recruitment can forgive a wrong date; it does not forgive a tampered certificate, and it treats that as a false declaration.

Declare the date exactly as it appears on the certificate you are submitting. A form whose entry disagrees with its own attachment is rejected on that ground alone, and it is rejected by a clerk without any discussion of what the truth is.

Work out whether the wrong date actually affects your eligibility. Frequently it does not: an error of a few days or months leaves you comfortably inside the age band, and the form can go ahead while the correction proceeds separately. Our age calculator will tell you where you stand against a notification's as on date.

If it does affect eligibility, do not paper over it. Apply for the correction, keep the acknowledgement, and read the notification for whether the certificate is required at application or at document verification. Those are different deadlines and the second one buys months.

And read our guide on name and date of birth mismatches across documents, because the correction here is only useful once every other document agrees with it.

What to do this week

If you take one thing from this page, take this sequence.

Read the date of birth on your matriculation certificate. Compare it to your birth certificate, your Aadhaar and your other marksheets. Most people have never done this deliberately.

If they agree, you are done, and you have removed a risk that ends other people's applications.

If they disagree, find out today which board issued the certificate and what its current correction procedure and window are. That single enquiry decides whether you have an errand or a serious problem, and the answer does not improve by being postponed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix my date of birth by correcting Aadhaar?

No. Government recruitment reads date of birth from the matriculation or secondary examination certificate, and most notifications say so directly. Correcting Aadhaar does not change what that certificate says.

Who corrects a date of birth on a Bihar board marksheet?

The Bihar School Examination Board that issued it, through biharboardonline.bihar.gov.in and the board office, usually routed through the school that entered the original record. For CBSE or another board, the correction goes to that board under its own rules.

What evidence does a board want?

Evidence that predates the record: the school admission register, the transfer certificate, and the original birth registration. A recently made document stating your correct date carries far less weight, because it may have copied the same error.

Is there a time limit for applying?

Yes. Boards allow corrections for a limited period after the result is declared, so that a school leaving certificate stays a stable record. Check the current window with your own board, because the period and its exceptions are not the same everywhere.

A recruitment is open now and my certificate is wrong. What should I declare?

Declare the date exactly as it appears on the certificate you are submitting, because a form that disagrees with its own attachment is rejected on that ground alone. Never alter the document. Then check with our age calculator whether the error affects your eligibility at all; often it does not.

ℹ️ Government rules, fees and processing times can change. Always confirm the current position on the official portal or at your block office before acting.
