Filling a Government Application From a Phone — What Breaks and How to Avoid It

Sarkari Naukri Khabar  •  All India

Most candidates in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh apply from a phone, because that is the device they have. Recruitment portals, though, are built and tested for a desktop browser, and the failures that follow are consistent: uploads rejected without an error, a session that expires mid-form, a payment that succeeds while the confirmation page never loads, and a preview that cannot be read closely enough to catch a mistake. None of this means a phone cannot be used. It means the phone has to be used differently. This guide sets out what actually breaks and the order of work that avoids most of it.

Do the preparation on the phone, the form in one sitting

The single most useful change is to stop treating the application as one task. Split it.

First, prepare everything: the photograph and signature at the exact size the notification specifies, the documents to be uploaded, and a written note of every detail you will type, name, parentage, date of birth, category, qualification figures, addresses. Copy those from the certificates, not from memory.

Then fill the form in one uninterrupted sitting, with all of it in front of you. Portals expire a session after a period of inactivity, and the form you were halfway through is often not recoverable.

Most failures come from doing both at once: starting the form, then hunting for a document, then resizing a photograph while the session runs down.

Uploads are where a phone fails most

A portal wants an exact pixel size, a file size in a narrow KB range, and JPG or JPEG. A phone camera produces a file several megabytes in size and thousands of pixels wide, and phone gallery apps do not resize to a specification.

What people then try, and why it fails: screenshotting the photograph to make it smaller, which changes the dimensions to the screen's and ruins them. Sending it to themselves on WhatsApp to compress it, which reduces quality unpredictably and can land outside the range in either direction. Cropping in the gallery, which changes the aspect ratio but not the file size.

The reliable way is to resize to the exact figures the notification gives, before opening the form. The photo resizer on this site does this in the browser. You give it the pixel size and the KB range, and it searches for the JPEG quality that lands inside the range. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Prepare both the photograph and the signature this way, and keep both in an obvious folder. Hunting for a file in a gallery of thousands, mid-form, is how sessions expire.

The session, and why the form disappears

Portals log you out after a period of inactivity, typically measured in minutes rather than hours, and a phone makes inactivity more likely: a call arrives, the screen locks, you switch apps to find a document and the browser is dropped from memory.

Practical defences. Turn on Do Not Disturb before you start. Set the screen timeout to its longest setting. Do not switch apps mid-form. This is why the preparation comes first. And where the portal offers "save as draft", use it at every step rather than at the end.

If a session does expire, sign in again before assuming the work is lost. Many portals keep a partial application, and some keep everything up to the last saved step.

Payment

This is the step to be most careful about on a phone, because payment moves you out to a bank or gateway page and back, and that round trip is where mobile browsers lose their way.

Do not switch apps to fetch an OTP if you can avoid it. Read it from the notification banner instead. Leaving the browser during a payment is a common way to break the return journey.

If money leaves your account and the form does not confirm, do not pay again immediately. Most portals reconcile within 24 to 48 hours. Wait, sign in, and check the application status. Keep the bank message and the transaction reference; without the reference the recruiting body cannot trace it.

Take a screenshot of the payment confirmation the moment it appears. On a phone it is easy to lose, and it is the thing you will be asked for.

The preview is the step people skip

On a small screen a preview is hard to read closely, so it gets scrolled past. That is exactly where a misspelled name or a mistyped date would have been caught.

Two ways to actually read it. Zoom in and read field by field against the certificates, slow, and it works. Or download the preview PDF and read it, which is easier to do carefully than a page in a browser.

If a computer is available anywhere (a friend, a cyber cafe, a library) the preview is the one step worth using it for, even if everything else was done on the phone.

When to use a computer instead

Some things are genuinely harder on a phone and it is worth finding a computer for them.

  • Creating a One Time Registration, which you will live with for years.
  • The final preview before submitting.
  • Downloading an admit card, which fails on mobile browsers more often than anything else.
  • Any correction window, where a mistake made in a hurry cannot be made twice.

A working order

Follow this and most of the problems above never arise.

  • Read the notification and write down the photograph and signature specifications, and every detail you will need to type.
  • Prepare the photograph and signature to those exact figures, and save them in a folder you can find.
  • Scan or photograph any documents to be uploaded, and prepare those too.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb, set the longest screen timeout, and connect to the most reliable network you have.
  • Fill the form in one sitting, saving a draft at every step.
  • Read the preview properly: zoomed in, or as a downloaded PDF.
  • Pay, screenshot the confirmation, and save the submitted form as a PDF.
  • Do all of this in the first week of the application window, not the last two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fill a government application entirely on a phone?

Yes, but the phone has to be used differently. Prepare everything first (photograph, signature, documents, and a written note of every detail to type) then fill the form in one uninterrupted sitting. Most failures come from doing both at once while the session runs down.

Why does my photo upload keep being rejected?

A phone camera produces a file far larger than the KB range and far wider than the pixel size a portal wants, and gallery apps do not resize to a specification. Screenshotting ruins the dimensions, WhatsApp compression is unpredictable, and cropping changes the ratio but not the file size. Resize to the exact figures the notification gives before you open the form.

My form disappeared halfway through. Is the work lost?

Not necessarily. Sign in again before assuming it, many portals keep a partial application, and some keep everything up to the last saved step. To prevent it, turn on Do Not Disturb, set the longest screen timeout, avoid switching apps, and save a draft at every step.

The money was deducted but the form did not submit. What now?

Do not pay again immediately. Most portals reconcile within 24 to 48 hours, wait, sign in and check the application status. Keep the bank message and the transaction reference, because without the reference the recruiting body cannot trace the payment.

What is the one thing I should use a computer for?

The final preview before submitting. On a small screen it is hard to read closely, so it gets scrolled past, and that is exactly where a misspelled name or a mistyped date would have been caught. Downloading an admit card is the other one, as that fails on mobile browsers more than anything else.

Should I switch apps to read the OTP during payment?

Avoid it if you can: read it from the notification banner instead. Leaving the browser during a payment is a common way to break the return journey from the bank page, which is when money leaves the account without the form confirming.

ℹ️ Government rules, fees and processing times can change. Always confirm the current position on the official portal or at your block office before acting.
