Screening test pattern, from the syllabus issued by the Principal Controller of Examinations, APSC (memo Exam-08/2026-2027), dated 17 July 2026:
Paper I: General Studies. Multiple choice, 100 marks, 2 hours, 100 objective questions. Topics: the Constitution and political system of India; current events of national and international importance; the Indian economy and planning process; geography of India, Assam and the world; the role of science and technology in India; culture and history of Assam, India and the world; the Indian national movement with special reference to Assam.
Paper II: Geophysics. Multiple choice, 100 marks, 2 hours, in nine topics:
1. Mathematics and physics, vector calculus, differential equations, Fourier analysis, probability and statistics, numerical methods, classical mechanics, elasticity, electromagnetism, wave propagation, heat flow and thermodynamics.
2. General geology, physical geology, geomorphology, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, plate tectonics and the Earth’s interior.
3. Gravity and magnetic methods, the Earth’s gravity and magnetic fields, gravity and magnetic anomalies, corrections, data acquisition, processing and interpretation, regional and residual separation.
4. Seismic methods, elastic wave theory, seismic refraction and reflection methods, data acquisition and processing, seismology, earthquakes and crustal studies.
5. Electrical and electromagnetic methods, electrical resistivity methods, self-potential (SP), induced polarization (IP), electromagnetic methods (TEM, FDEM, MT), and basic borehole geophysics.
6. Radiometric and thermal methods, natural radioactivity, gamma-ray surveys, geothermal and heat-flow studies.
7. Applied and exploration geophysics, applications in mineral, coal and groundwater exploration, basic concepts of oil and gas exploration, engineering and environmental geophysics, integrated geophysical interpretation.
8. Remote sensing, GIS and computing, principles of remote sensing, GIS applications in geosciences, geophysical modelling and inversion, signal processing, basic computer applications in geophysics.
9. Field work and practical, geophysical instruments, field survey techniques, data processing, interpretation and technical report writing.
